We Dine Together was started last fall at a high school in Boca Raton, Florida, and promotes togetherness

“This is going to make a difference,” one student told CBS.

It’s so common it’s become a movie trope, but nearly everyone has a not-so-fond memory of walking into a school cafeteria with a lunch tray and having no one to sit with. One high school student in Boca Raton, Florida is trying to eliminate the awkwardness of sitting alone with a new initiative that ensures every student has a lunchtime buddy (or two or three).

Denis Estimon, a student at Boca Raton Community High School, started We Dine Together because he remembers struggling to make friends during his own awkward days as a Haitian immigrant new to Florida, according to the Good News Network. The We Dine Together club members spend their lunch periods walking around and seeking out loner kids who might be in need of cafeteria companions.

“It’s not a good feeling, like you’re by yourself,” Estimon told CBS. “And that’s something that I don’t want anybody to go through.”

Estimon and his friends are trying to expand their club to other schools around the country. It’s similar to the “No One Eats Alone” initiative that 1,400 schools nationwide participated in last week, although No One Eats Alone is only a one-day initiative, whereas Estimon’s peer-to-peer outreach program is year-round.

Breakfast and Lunch is available at each school. We work hard to offer a variety of options to choose from. We look forward to serving you!

We offer free and reduced priced meals to eligible children if their parents or guardians complete the appropriate application.

For those who don’t apply or don’t qualify, elementary children are allowed to charge the dollar amount up to the price of three lunches. Middle School children are allowed to charge the equivalent of one meal. High School students are not allowed to charge. If a child does not have enough in their account for a regular meal, an alternate meal is provided free of charge. There is no limit on the number of alternate meals provided. No child is forced to go hungry.

This free meal meets the federal meal requirements including milk. If a child is repeatedly receiving an alternate meal, school food service staff contacts the district food service office to follow up with the principal or parents to assist in getting the balance cleared up. Staff will also contact the food service office to transfer money between children in the same family in order to ensure a regular meal is served.

Notifications are sent to parents via email and in the case of elementary children, by paper notice daily where no email is provided.
